The protesters will begin the march at 11:00 hours. At noon,
presidents of four union federations will speak at Maksimir. The
unions are for the first time organising a joint celebration of
Labour Day, union representatives told a news conference today.
During the rally dubbed "Change Yourselves, not the Labour Act",
unionists will show the government the "yellow card" because of its
announcements that it would amend the Labour Act which, according
to the unions, would drastically reduce workers' rights.
Similar rallies will also be held in Osijek, Rijeka, Split,
Dubrovnik, Karlovac, Koprivnica and Virovitica.
The unionists have decided to boycott a seminar on the changes to
the Labour Act which the government's Office for Social Partnership
is organising at Plitvice Lakes National Park on Thursday and
Friday.
They threatened to hold a general strike if the government sent
amendments to the Act into parliament without prior agreement with
the unions.
The Action of Social Democrats of Croatia (ASH) on Monday voiced
support to the four union federations' announced rally, and called
on all Croatian workers to join in the rally on Labour Day on
Wednesday.
The protest was also endorsed by the Croatian Christian Democratic
Union party and the Union of Croatian School Employees.
