"Negotiations with the Tribunal are underway," Sainovic's attorney
Toma Fila said.
"Mr. Sainovic has responded to the appeal of the federal
government. We will go to The Hague to see justice done," Fila
said.
Sainovic is on a joint indictment along with former Yugoslav
President Slobodan Milosevic as one of Milosevic's four closest
associates charged with crimes committed in Kosovo in 1999. Former
Yugoslav Army Chief-of-Staff Dragoljub Ojdanic turned himself in
to the Hague tribunal on Thursday, while former Serbian Interior
Minister Vlajko Stojiljkovic committed suicide. The fourth on the
indictment is the incumbent Serbian President Milan Milutinovic.
Several other indictees who have said that they will surrender
voluntarily, including the former leader of Croatian Serb rebels,
Milan Martic, accused of the 1995 shelling of Zagreb, and General
Mile Mrksic, charged with the massacre of patients from the Vukovar
hospital, have been given between 15 and 30 days to prepare for
departure.
Veselin Sljivancanin, who has been accused together with Mrksic and
Miroslav Radic of the massacre at Ovcara, denied that he intended to
surrender, dismissing reports on his surrender as "fabrications",
Television B92 said.
According to the TV station, Sljivancanin explained his contacts
with the Justice Ministry with his wish to protest against a public
campaign he claims he has been exposed to. Sljivancanin said on
previous occasions that he had no intention of surrendering and
never left his home without a hand grenade.
