Stojiljkovic, an MP, attempted suicide in front of the Yugoslav
parliament building in Belgrade after parliament's Council of
Citizens adopted a law on cooperation with the UN war crimes
tribunal at The Hague.
Stojiljkovic had left a farewell letter, accusing for his act the
leaders of the DOS ruling coalition. He had been announcing his
suicide, in the letter and to party colleagues and friends, saying
he did not want to surrender to the Hague tribunal alive.
Stojiljkovic held the office of Serbia's interior minister from
1997 until October 2000, when former President Slobodan Milosevic
was defeated at elections. Together with Milosevic he had been
accused of war crimes against civilians committed in Kosovo in
1999.
