ZAGREB, March 1 (Hina) - Forty patients die annually due to complications during medical treatment and operations in Croatian hospitals, Health Minister Andro Vlahusic said commenting on three recent post-operative patient deaths in
Zagreb and Split. A total of 150 people die in Croatia daily and 350 weekly, of whom one third die in hospitals, and only one death weekly is caused by complications during treatment, Vlahusic said. In 2000, 23 persons died from complications during medical treatment, while, for example, 31 froze to death, 63 died of suffocation and 560 died of injuries caused by falls. Vlahusic said that sensationalist interpretations of these data could only do greater harm to citizens' health as they aroused unfounded fear of hospital treatment.(hina) sb rml
