ZAGREB, Feb 19 (Hina) - In 2001, Croatia exported goods in the amount of US$4.66 billion, which is 5.1 percent more than in 2000, while import increased by 14.7 percent and exceeded US$9 billion, the State Bureau of Statistics said in
a statement on Tuesday. Last year saw a deficit in trade of almost US$4.4 billion, while export covered only 51.5 percent of import. The manufacturing industry accounts for the majority of Croatian export and its export value amounted to US$4.41 billion in 2001, which is 3.6 percent more than in 2000. Italy remains Croatia's chief foreign trade partner, with US$1.1
billion made in export and US$1.5 billion in import, followed by
Germany with export amounting to US$688.9 million and import to
US$1.54 billion.
The European Union countries remain the main market for Croatian
products - the value of export last year increased by 5.4 percent,
to US$2.55 billion. Also, products from these countries are the
most imported items - import rose by 15.9 percent, to US$5.06
billion.
Croatia's export to Central European Free Trade Agreement
countries in 2001 amounted to US$565.7 million (a decrease of 7.6
percent), and import to US$1.4 billion (a 21.3 percent increase).
Slovenia was the most significant importer (US$426.1 million),
even though in relation to 2000, export there decreased by 11.2
percent. Import from Slovenia rose by 13.6 percent, to US$711.56
million.
Croatia also decreased its export to and increased its import from
Hungary. The value of export dropped by 5.4 percent, to US$56.7
million, while import rose by 29.5 percent, to US$238 million.
Croatia's export to Bosnia-Herzegovina rose by 13.1 percent in
2001, to US$559.6 million, while import rose by 55.2 percent,
reaching US$126.7 million.
In trade with Yugoslavia, Croatian export rose by 36.9 percent, to
US$146.8 million, while import increased by 28.2 percent, to
US$39.2 million.
