ZAGREB, Jan 24 (Hina) - Croatia imported US$799 million and exported US$432 million worth of food in the first 11 months of 2001, Deputy Agriculture Minister Tomislav Ledic said in parliament on Thursday. Despite the fact that import
increases in December, Ledic claims last year's amount on the annual level will not exceed one billion US dollars. Last year's import ranged from coffee and rice, to oranges, corn, and fish. Export included biscuits, chocolate, sugar, the Vegeta spice, and cigarettes. Most of the export was realised on the Bosnian, Yugoslav, Slovene, Italian, German, and Macedonian markets, while most of the import came from Italy and Hungary. Last year's import ranged from coffee and rice, to oranges, corn,
and fish. Export included biscuits, chocolate, sugar, the Vegeta
spice, and cigarettes. Most of the export was realised on the
Bosnian, Yugoslav, Slovene, Italian, German, and Macedonian
markets, while most of the import came from Italy and Hungary.
These data were put forward during today's debate on a government
report on the movement of prices of farm produce and its import,
which was one of a dozen debates parliament wrapped up today.
The major debates focused on three strategies focusing on culture,
environmental protection, and information technology.
An environmental protection national strategy was endorsed by all
parliamentary benches, which commended its openness to new
programmes and projects. They also advocated formulating
priorities in environmental protection more precisely.
Parliament also endorsed the strategy "Information and
Communication Technology - Croatia in the 21st Century", which
brings 17 strategic recommendations and points out what Croatia has
to do to as to information and communication technology in order to
join the developed modern world. The MPs advocated facilitating the
purchase of computers, general computer literacy, and lower prices
for Internet access.
The benches applauded the strategy "Cultural Development - Croatia
in the 21st Century", with the exception of the opposition's
Croatian Democratic Union, mostly due to critical assessments of
the past decade, when the party was in rule.
Culture Minister Antun Vujic says the strategy advocates the
preservation of the pluralism of cultural orientations, cultural
aesthetics and institutions, despite all the changes. The policy of
the Culture Ministry, the government, and this strategy is the
promotion of the autonomy of culture, Vujic says.
Parliament today also wrapped up a debate on a final bill on
cooperatives, which aims to create conditions for the
establishment of a cooperative society network via an umbrella
organisation - the Cooperative Association.
