ZAGREB, Jan 25 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament adopted with a majority vote on Friday amendments to the law on the Corruption and Organised Crime Prevention Office (USKOK), and the law on youth courts. The amendments to the law on
youth courts should provide more protection for children and the youth in court proceedings. The amendments to the USKOK law stipulate that county investigating judges may be subjected to security checks even without their consent. Such checks would be carried out before the judges come into office and during the mandate. The amendments also narrow USKOK's jurisdiction, which in the future will tackle only organised crime. The amendments to the USKOK law stipulate that county investigating

into office and during the mandate. The amendments also narrow
USKOK's jurisdiction, which in the future will tackle only
organised crime.
Parliament today also adopted a new law on cooperatives, which aims
to create conditions for the establishment of a cooperative society
network via an umbrella organisation - the Cooperative
Association.
A national environmental protection strategy was also adopted,
while a Party of Rights (HSP) proposal to ban the storing of
radioactive waste generated by the dismantling of nuclear power
plants was turned down, with 67 abstentions.
The MPs also adopted a report on the movements of prices of farm
produce in 2001, and a new law on mountain areas.
