According to processed returns from 85 percent of polling stations,
the Serb Radical Party of Vojislav Seselj will have 82 deputies in the
new parliament, the Democratic Party of Serbia of Vojislav Kostunica
53, the Democratic Party of the assassinated prime minister Zoran
Djindjic 37, G17 Plus of Miroljub Labus 34, the coalition of the Serb
Revival Movement of Vuk Draskovic and New Serbia of Velimir Ilic 23,
and the Socialist Party of Serbia of Slobodan Milosevic 21. The
coalition "Together for Tolerance" did not pass the election
threshold.
The Serbian parliament has 250 deputies. The election commission will
announce the final and official election results by 8 pm on January 1
at the latest.
The parties which three years ago ousted the regime of Slobodan
Milosevic yesterday won some 400,000 votes less than in 2000. Of the
18 parties of the then coalition, which in 2000 won 2.4 million votes,
11 parties and coalitions took part in yesterday's polls, but most of
them did not pass the election threshold.
Since the 2000 elections, the Serb Radical Party has made the most
progress. In 2000 it won 322,000 votes and at yesterday's elections
three times as many (1,069,000).
Some 450,000 voters voted for the parties of the former DOS coalition
which did not pass the election threshold.
