ZAGREB, Dec 12 (Hina) - The independent union of interior ministry employees on Friday urged the establishment of a special fund and an increase of employer's liability insurance so that families of police casualties can be adequately provided for. #L# The request was made on the occasion of the death of officer Dragan Medakovic, killed on Wednesday when a car deliberately ran him over on a road connecting Bapska and Sarengrad in easternmost Croatia. It is assumed the car was used by smugglers to illegally enter the country from Serbia-Montenegro. The union recalled that the average monthly police officer's salary was 2,900 kuna, which with supplements amounted to between 3,500 and 4,000 kuna, as well as that 55 percent of the force did not own their own flats. Under the Police Act, in case of an accident, an officer's family is entitled to 30,000 kuna in insurance and a one-off compensation in the amount of 12 monthly salaries, as well as pension and child's allowance.
