SPLIT, Nov 13 (Hina) - Slavko Linic of the Social Democratic Party
(SDP) on Thursday described, at journalists' request, what
happened on Sunday when two SDP candidates had eggs thrown at them
at a pre-electoral rally in Imotski. #L#
Linic, who is first on the slate for constituency no. 10 of a
coalition the SDP formed with Libra and the Liberal Party (LS) ahead
of parliamentary elections later this month, told reporters in
Split that several eggs were hurled at him by someone nearby, which
resulted in a cut on one of his temples.
"The egg attacker was very aggressive, hurling insults, and when
one of the SDP members from Imotski saw that blood was dripping from
my forehead, he threw a cup with coffee towards the egg thrower,"
Linic said.
At that moment, he went on, someone from the cafe they were sitting
in "hurled a glass in my and Marin Jurjevic's direction but missed,
and then the egg thrower grabbed an ashtray and made for the SDP
member who had thrown the cup of coffee at him".
Linic said he stood between the two, after which the egg attacker
retreated which, he added, averted a more serious incident.
Asked if the police took a statement, Linic answered in the
affirmative, adding that he told the police that "the man who threw
eggs was manipulated with and that I didn't want to press charges".
Jurjevic, second on the SDP-Libra-LS slate in constituency no. 10,
said that in his statement to the police he mentioned only the egg
throwing because only eggs hit them. He too said he would not press
charges.
Speaking about the incident, both Linic and Jurjevic said that a
number of people at the cafe insulted them and the SDP, and that at
one moment the situation was very tense.
Split police spokeswoman Tina Disopra today replied in writing to a
query Hina made in writing on the 12th asking if police had checked
media allegations that solid objects had been thrown at Linic and
Jurjevic, not just eggs.
In her reply Disopra said that police informed the public about the
Imotski incident on the day it occurred, Nov. 9.
"A misdemeanour was committed against SDP candidates on the slate
for constituency no. 10. Split-Dalmatia County Police Department
has nothing further to add," read Disopra reply.
