PULA, Dec 8 (Hina) - Ombudsman Ante Klaric, currently on a five-day
visit to Istria County, said on Monday that the social, economic and
security situation in Istria was encouraging and different than in
other areas in Croatia. #L#
Speaking after talks with county leaders, Klaric praised the local
government for reducing the unemployment to seven per cent,
resolving numerous social problems, and raising the organisation
of local government structures to an enviable level.
The ombudsman said that complaints from citizens mainly concerned
issues falling within the jurisdiction of the Interior Ministry,
environmental protection, unlawful housing construction, and
employment-related problems.
Klaric supported a request by the Istrian authorities for the
decentralisation of financing, which he said would strengthen
local government and the rule of law.
