Mesic said it was obvious that eight years after the war the local
economy had still not recovered, and he urged investing more into
formerly war-stricken areas such as Glina and Banovina.
Asked what he as the president could do for the economic development
of said areas, Mesic answered that until 2000 Croatia had sought
loans abroad for spending, while the current authorities had
invested all foreign loans in the development of infrastructure to
facilitate economic development.
"I believe that the new parliament and government will commit
themselves to development, production and an export-oriented
economy, as it is clear that Croatia cannot successfully develop
itself with exports totalling five billion dollars and imports
totalling ten billion," Mesic said.
There are conditions for production in Glina, and entrepreneurs
should be given tax relief for creating new jobs and opening
businesses, Mesic added. In this context, he urged improving
cooperation between local authorities and the state government.
