Around one hundred minority representatives and members of
minority councils, elected in May this year, attended the seminar
called "National Minorities Councils: Operation, Rights,
Possibilities". The event was organised by the government's office
for national minorities, the Justice Ministry, and the City of
Zagreb.
Minority councils as a way for minorities to participate in public
authority on the level of local and regional self-government bodies
is a unique solution, which will take a lot of understanding and
patience to implement, both from bodies of local and regional self-
government as well as from minority representatives, the minister
said.
Budislav Vukas, a professor of international public law at Zagreb's
Law School, dismissed criticisms by international experts
regarding the protection of minority rights in Croatia. He said
that they were regulated in keeping with relevant international
documents.
The government has called additional elections for minority
representatives and members of minority councils, as well as
minority councillors in bodies of local and regional self-
government, for December 14.
Less than a half of minority councils and representatives was
elected in the May elections.
