ZAGREB, Oct 9 (Hina) - Croatian MPs said in parliament on Thursday
that the proposed general regulations under which all electronic
media with national concession would have to cover the election
campaign would bring commercial radio and television stations in a
less favourable position. #L#
Supporting the intention of the Committee on the Constitution, Rule
Book and the Political System to regulate the way of covering the
campaigning, Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) and Croatian True
Revival (HIP) warned that commercial media houses would not be able
to fully respect the regulations due to a lack of technical
equipment and personnel.
Dario Vukic of the HIP said the regulations would significantly
reduce the income of commercial television and radio stations
because there would be less room for commercials, which bring
profit.
Luka Rojic of the HSS said that the equal presentation of all
parties in 50-minute shows would misinform rather than inform the
public.
Vesna Skare-Ozbolt of the Democratic Centre doubts that the
regulations will be implemented, given that there is no plan to
monitor the coverage of the election campaign. She moved for the
establishment of a parliamentary committee on observing the work of
the media during the election period.
On behalf of the sponsor of the regulations - the parliamentary
political system committee - its chairman Mato Arlovic said the
committee was not able to draw up new regulations in such a short
period. He said it adjusted the existing regulations to amendments
to the electoral law and the new electronic media act.
Parliament ended it today's session with a discussion on the work of
stores on Sunday and will resume the debate on Friday.
