Talking to reporters, Mesic said his talks with representatives of
Hungarian authorities focused on economic cooperation.
"The chances of it intensifying are great, notably now when Croatia
is finishing highways which will enable the economies of Hungary
and a large part of Central Europe to use Croatia's ports. These
roads will also help us to faster access that market, which is very
important for us."
Mesic said an important aspect of his talks in Hungary was the
agreement reached to open some more border crossings and build a
bridge across the Mura. He added it was also agreed that Hungary
would further invest in Croatia, particularly in production.
The president said his trip gave him an opportunity to see how the
Croatian national minority was cared for, and that it was well
organised.
Hungarian President Ferenz Madl, who accompanied Mesic to Pecs,
said relations between the two countries were good in the past as
well.
Madl said Mesic's visit furthered the friendship and cooperation
between the two countries, notably in light of efforts to get closer
to the European Union, which Hungary joins in May.
"We hope Croatia will become an EU member soon, and in the meantime
we can do a lot more to strengthen cooperation in all areas. We have
established the steps we have to take to deepen our cooperation
despite the introduction of the Schengen border regime, so that it
does not become a barrier," Madl said.
