THE UNITED NATIONS, Sept 23 (Hina) - Croatia on Tuesday signed the
Agreement on Privileges and Immunities of the International
Criminal Court (ICC) and the Facultative Protocol of the UN
Convention against Torture. #L#
The two documents, which strengthen the protection of human rights,
were signed by Foreign Minister Tonino Picula at the UN
headquarters in New York.
The Croatian official also notified the UN Convention Against the
Taking of Hostages.
Picula, who is attending the UN General Assembly's session,
recalled that Croatia was the first south-east European country to
become a party of the ICC.
The facultative protocol offers additional assurances for the full
implementation of the Convention against Torture, making it
possible for independent international and national bodies to
visit inmates detained in prisons so as to prevent harassment and
inhumane treatment.
Picula announced that Croatia would soon ratify another key
instrument in the fight against terrorism -- the international
convention preventing the financing of terrorism.
