Croatia's Ambassador to Italy, Drago Kraljevic, said the decision
about Croatia's associate membership would be formalised by the end
of the conference.
Associate membership means that Croatia will have two permanent
members in the Assembly, who will attend all sessions of WEU
commissions and take part in debates of political, technical and
defence commissions, but it will not have the right to vote,
Kraljevic said.
The WEU conference, which started on Monday and ends on Wednesday,
is focusing on the joint EC-WEU security policy in light of the new
international situation. Croatia's delegation at the conference is
headed by Mato Arlovic.
The WEU is an alliance of defence forces of European countries
established in 1955. In 1991 its headquarters moved from London to
Brussels. The WEU, as the EU's defence wing, takes part in
humanitarian and peace operations.
