After the meeting, held in a tent in front of Gaddafi's residence,
Mesic told reporters he had informed his Libyan counterpart about
the situation in south-eastern Europe, the stabilisation of
Croatia's economy after the war and relations with neighbours. The
talks also addressed business cooperation, he added.
Mesic said Libya was planning the construction of 4,000 kilometres
of railways, in which Croatian companies could be very interested.
The Libyan president was unavailable to Croatian reporters for
comment.
Some 40 representatives of Croatian companies, who are
accompanying Mesic on his visit, will discuss economic cooperation
with Libyan business people in more detail.
It has been announced, although not officially confirmed, that
Mesic could meet Gaddafi again before leaving the country.
The Croatian president said upon his arrival at the Sirt airport
that the two countries did not have open issues and he expected his
visit to contribute to stepping up economic cooperation.
Mesic will leave Sirt for Tripoli on Wednesday to attend several
business talks.
The Croatian president was given a warm official welcome at the
airport. Besides being welcomed with full military and state
honours, Mesic was greeted by almost the entire Libyan state
leadership. An event with traditional Libyan folklore dances was
organised in his honour.
The streets of Sirt, a new city built on a narrow belt separating the
sea and the desert, have been decorated with Croatian and Libyan
flags, while lamp posts have been adorned with photographs of Mesic
and Gaddafi.
