ZAGREB, July 9 (Hina) - A public debate on a media bill, which along
with a bill on electronic media and a recently adopted law on
Croatian Radio-Television makes a package of pertinent
legislation, was held at the Croatian Journalists Association
(HND) building. #L#
Introducing the bill, Culture Minister Antun Vujic told
representatives of journalists' associations that it was aimed at
expanding media freedom and autonomy and improving the protection
of journalists.
The bill introduces order in the Croatian media space, which should
serve the public interest, Vujic said.
Vujic claims that the bill is fully adjusted to the relevant
European Union regulations and that it regulates the issue of
ownership transparency.
The bill binds media publishers to issue annual reporters on their
ownership structure and programme concept, and for the first time
regulates the distribution of the press, Vujic said.
He added that special attention was paid to the protection of
citizens from the media, i.e. their right to have incorrectly
published information corrected.
Attorney Vesna Alaburic believes that in some of its segments the
bill is a step backward in relation to the existing law.
She believes that the bill is more restrictive with regard to the
availability of information to journalists and that it extends the
list of information considered confidential.
