ZAGREB, July 9 (Hina) - About three hundred members of three trade
union federations on Wednesday staged a protest rally in front of
the Croatian parliament calling on MPs to vote against the final
bill of amendments to the Labour Act. #L#
Members of the Croatian Federation of Trade Unions (HUS), the
Federation of Workers' Unions of Croatia (URSH) and the Independent
Croatian Unions (NHS) called on deputies to demand a third reading
of the bill or adopt amendments sponsored by trade unions regarding
severance pays, periods of notice and the number of workers
employed by small business owners.
The leaders of the three union federations said the protest rally
was a pre-election warning to all political parties and MPs.
"The future of workers depends on how you will raise your hands, but
your future depends on how workers will vote at the coming
elections," HUS leader Zdenko Mucnjak said.
The URSH leader, Boris Kunst, added that workers would not agree to
any compensation, deals or bargains restricting their rights.
The NHS chief, Kresimir Sever, pointed the finger at the incumbent
government accusing it of social insensitivity.
Protesters criticised Davor Juric, the leader of the strongest
trade union federation, the SSSH, for its failure to take part in
the protest.
Union leaders said their future action would depend on the result of
the vote in parliament. "If the amendments to the Labour Act are
adopted, the trade unions will organise protest rallies before the
elections in order to remind their members of who restricted their
rights," Kunst said.
