BELGRADE, June 13 (hina) - Yugoslav People's Army Colonel Veselin Sljivancanin, whom the UN war crimes tribunal indicted for war crimes in Croatia's Vukovar, was arrested on the night between Thursday and Friday in his Belgrade apartment, the Serbian government confirmed to Radio B92. #L# The arrest operation started Thursday afternoon. His hardline nationalist supporters tried to prevent the police from entering his apartment claiming that Sljivancanin was not there. Police fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the hostile crowd and then battered down the armoured door of Sljivancanin's flat shortly before midnight. Several persons were injured. Contrary to previous announcement, Sljivancanin did not put up resistance during the arrest. He is indicted together with Milo Mrksic and Miroslav Radic who have surrendered to the Hague tribunal. Sljivancanin's arrest comes two days before the United States certifies that Belgrade is cooperating with the tribunal on rounding up war crimes suspects, a step essential for the release of further economic aid worth about US$100 million.
