ZAGREB, June 11 (Hina) - Croatia's Federation of Independent Trade Unions (SSSH) dismissed on Wednesday claims by the Croatian Employers' Association that a proposed Penal Code provision in case of non-payment of salaries would diminish the competitiveness of domestic economy and turn potential investors away.
#L# The provision stipulates imprisonment ranging from three months to three years for employers who breach workers' rights. One of the violations is failure to pay wages within a prescribed time period without justifiable reason. Similar Penal Code provisions are applied in other states as well, SSSH president Davor Juric told a news conference. He said 165,000 Croatians did not get paid for their work in 1999, 128,300 in 2000, 100,300 in 2001, and 48,400 in 2002. This year, thanks to a series of legislative measures, the figure will be reduced to 25,000, Juric said. (hina) ha sb
