ZAGREB, June 2 (Hina) - During yesterday's inspections of stores
and catering services which are open on Sundays, state inspectors
found a number of irregularities, says a preliminary report by the
State Inspectorate which will be submitted to Prime Minister Ivica
Racan on Monday. #L#
"We noted numerous cases of black labour, some employees were found
to have not been registered and without the elementary documents,
there were cases of non-payment of working hours, and all other
forms of irregularities usual for shops: not putting up prices or
expiry dates, selling bad products, etc," chief state inspector
Branko Jordanic told Hina.
Several hundreds of inspectors yesterday checked some 2,400
stores, markets, pastry shops, bakeries and other facilities
working Sundays in all Croatian regions.
State inspectors are going over documents, pay sheets and company
books so the government can receive a preliminary report on the
number of completed inspections, employees found on site and the
number of violations of provisions on working hours and the Labour
Act.
The report is expected to be completed in two weeks.
Last week PM Racan asked the State Inspectorate to carry out a
strict control of stores and other companies which are open on
Sundays, after the Caritas and the shop assistants' union started
the initiative to ban work Sundays.
Despite the noted violations, Jordanic still believes that "the
situation in this field is better than public attacks say".
According to him, most companies which registered work on Sundays
are functioning in compliance with law. A far greater problem is
black labour in which there is no respect for the rights of
employees.
