The integration of Europe must not be a discriminatory process, but
a synthesis of political, economic and cultural differences
characteristic of the European continent, Iliescu said in a lecture
on Romania's attitude to integration and globalisation. Iliescu
gave the lecture at the Europe House in Zagreb at the end of the
first day of his two-day official visit to Croatia.
The Romanian president hopes that his country will wrap up
negotiations on admission to the European Union next year and join
the EU in 2007.
Speaking about globalisation, Iliescu said it was a process in
which some won and some lost, but nobody could remain outside of it.
The positive effects of globalisation include the restructuring of
economy, the introduction of new technologies and the expansion of
human rights, Iliescu said, adding nevertheless that the cultural
and environmental components of globalisation should be stronger.
