Bureau of Statistics. #L#
According to the poll, 259,000 people were registered as unemployed
in the second half of 2002.
There is a six percentage point difference in the unemployment rate
between HZZ administrative data and the poll. According to the HZZ,
this rate in the second half of 2002 was 21.5 percent, while
according to the poll it was 14.4 percent.
Both sources note a significant drop in the number of the unemployed
in last year's second half when compared to the first, from 405,000
to 375,000 according to the HZZ, and 273,000 to 259,000 according to
the poll.
The labour poll, which the Central Bureau of Statistics conducts
twice a year, defines the jobless by three criteria -- that in the
surveyed week they have not worked at all, that they are looking for
a job, and that they are willing to accept an offered job. Everyone
who has worked for compensation at least one hour in the surveyed
week is considered an employed person.
According to the poll, there were 1,534,000 employed people in
Croatia in the second half of 2002, aged 25-49.
The employed were more numerous in the private than the state
sector. The private sector employed 965,000, of whom 286,000 were
self-employed, according to the labour poll. The state sector
employed 535,000 people, while 33,000 were employed in companies
undergoing privatisation.
