"Neither the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) nor the coalition
government have shown any will to deal with difficulties, but we
hope that after the forthcoming elections Croatia will finally get
a government led by experts who will take into account the difficult
position of workers," Zdenko Mucnjak said at the convention in
Split.
Therefore the HUS will favour no political option at the coming
elections, Mucnjak added.
According to him, one of the biggest problems in the country is the
authorities' attempt to cook figures about a fall in unemployment,
as, he said, the incumbent government is not able to create new
jobs. Figures on a decrease in the jobless rate have been obtained
through the erasing of those on the dole from lists of the Croatian
Employment Bureau, Mucnjak asserted.
He expressed hope that in the coming 10 days negotiations would be
wrapped up on draft amendments to the Labour Act and that disputable
provisions, relating to dismissal notices and severance pays,
would be changed to the benefit of workers.
Participants in the Split convention talked about the HUS
activities in the past period and about possibilities for closer
cooperation with other trade union federations.
