ZAGREB, May 9 (Hina) - Croatian MPs on Friday in principle endorsed

Centre to found a memorial area for the eastern town of Vukovar.

vital issues, such as the economy. #L#
Vukovar deserves a memorial area because it is an example of the
biggest genocide, ethnocide, and culturocide carried out, MPs said
among other things, stressing that Vukovar's sacrifice was crucial
in the creation of Croatia.
The benches of the Social Democrats and the Social Liberals said
local authorities should also give their opinion of the bill.
The MPs recalled the horrors Vukovar went through in the autumn 1991
Serbian aggression.
Three million missiles hit the town, thousands of residents were
imprisoned, while the Vukovar area is also the location of 49 of all
137 mass graves in the country, said Juraj Njavro of the Croatian
Democratic Union.
As regards the town's future, the MPs agree Vukovar needs help to
revive the economy and provide employment for its residents.
Parliament wrapped this week's sitting by debating Skare-Ozbolt's
bill, and meets again on Wednesday, when it is scheduled to tackle a
Croatian Party of Rights bill on banning genetically modified
organisms and products.
