Many scientific, cultural, political, and church figures, state
officials, guests from home and abroad, including President
Stjepan Mesic, attended.
Mesic said today would go down in the history of both Zadar and
Croatia. The founding of a fifth university in the country is a
major event because those who invest in science and education have
secured their future, he said.
The President recalled today's ceremony was in fact a
reinauguration because Zadar University was originally founded in
1396. The founding of the university is a "great contribution to the
adoption of standards we all advocate," he said.
Mesic said united Europe would become a world factor, a partner to
the U.S., Japan, and China. "War has been excluded from Europe for
good because with open borders there are no reasons for wars," he
said, adding "we Croats are interested in living in this united
Europe in the totality of our culture".
Croatia is achieving the standards which enable it to be equal to
those which are already united, the President said.
