The three-day event was organised by Croatian Radio and
Television.
In his speech, Mesic accentuated the changes which took place in the
media after the disintegration of communism in the early 1990s.
At the time the media were exposed and had to find their path, a
process characterised by a lot of wandering and going astray, said
Mesic.
"It was a time when some media willingly allowed unscrupulous
politicians to turn them into means of manipulating the public
which, fortunately, is a thing of the past," said the President,
adding today focus should be put on "eradicating political
propaganda and the language of hatred from the media".
The Cavtat forum tackled television coproduction, radio, women of
the Mediterranean and culture, and included workshops on
cooperation among festivals, satellite programmes, and exchange of
news, as well as round-table debates on the reality and priorities
of the current development of the Mediterranean, the role of the
media in raising awareness and informing people, and models of
journalistic coverage.
