ZAGREB, April 28 (Hina) - Caritas Croatia and the Franciscan Institute for the Culture of Peace, with the support of the Croatian Bishops' Conference, on Monday presented the campaign which is aimed at banning the work of stores on Sunday and holidays. #L# At a news conference at the Croatian Bishops' Conference it was said that the campaign, which would last through the entire month of May, was aimed at influencing parliament and the government to adopt a law which would ban the work of stores on Sunday and holidays. The project is supported by the Trade Union of Croatia, the Federation of Independent Unions, the Independent Croatian Unions and the Croatian Employers' Association. Union and Church representatives on Monday signed a petition against the work on Sunday and holidays. The signing of the petition will be held in 80 towns across Croatia on May 1-15. The head of Caritas Croatia, Mario Bebic, said that the petition is aimed at protecting 40,000 workers in stores without a right to a day off, which in the Christian tradition is Sunday. The head of the Franciscan Institute for the Culture of Peace, Bozo Vuleta, also pointed to the problem of workers in stores and their families and stressed that those workers were suffering because of the employer's order and a fear of losing their jobs and becoming welfare cases. Speaking on behalf of Caritas Croatia, Bishop Vlado Kosic said that the Church strongly supported the campaign and reminded that Archbishop Josip Bozanic pointed to the problem in his Easter message.
