said on Saturday the sorry indicator of the fragmentation of the
Croatian people was evident at yesterday's funeral of General Janko
Bobetko. #L#
Addressing the founding assembly of HB's Rijeka branch, Pasalic
said war veterans at the funeral were unable to keep quiet about the
fact that Bobetko, a former military chief-of-staff, died an
indictee of the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague. "Veterans
spoke about politics, while politicians, unfortunately, said
nothing."
As for President Stjepan Mesic's explanation of his inability to
attend the funeral in Sisak, Pasalic described it as
"inappropriate".
Stating that all political parties should be united when it came to
fundamental national issues, Pasalic said people in the West "are
proud of their heroes, while we criminalise ours and the Homeland
War". HB will try to unite the struggle for national values and the
struggle for the creation of a new, modern Croatia, he said.
As for upcoming parliamentary elections, Pasalic said HB's goal was
to rearrange political relations and change the government. He
estimated changes in relations among the ruling coalition's five
parties would not occur either before or after the ballot. He also
stated that the Croatian Democratic Union, the strongest
opposition party, opposed entering pre-election coalitions.
