Susak, one of the closest associates of Croatia's first president,
the late Franjo Tudjman, became a cabinet minister after the first
free elections in Croatia. He had returned from Canada, where he had
been an entrepreneur and president of some Croatian diaspora
institutions. He was Croatia's minister for emigration and deputy
defence minister in 1990 and 1991, when he was appointed minister
for defence, an office he held until his death on 3 May 1998.
