ZAGREB, Apr 30 (Hina) - The measures from the Croatian government's
employment stimulation programme have proven very successful,
better than in other countries with similar measures, Labour
Minister Davorko Vidovic said on Wednesday at a government session
at which a report on the implementation of employment measures
between March 2002 and March 2003 was adopted. #L#
The measures envisaged finding employment for 17,948 people but
12.2 percent more were actually employed -- 20,132 persons -- an
average of 55 people daily, said the minister.
The government launched the programme in March last year, when
415,352 people were registered as out of a job -- a record high. At
the end of the year the figure was 7.3 percent lower than at the end
of 2001.
The drop in unemployment has continued this year. Last year was the
first time in 15 years that unemployment continually decreased,
while employment increased mildly, although not sufficiently.
The government believe a permanent foundation has been created to
reduce the number of the jobless in the long term. They caution,
however, about the fact that despite the high number of the
unemployed Croatia lacks labour in construction and shipbuilding,
because of which workers are imported. This is due to the poor
mobility of labour as well as the fact that registered with the
Employment Bureau are people whose professions are not in demand,
it was said today.
