ZAGREB, April 24 (Hina) - Croatia's legal representative in a
lawsuit against the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) for
genocide, Deputy Foreign Minister Ivan Simonovic, will on Friday
submit to the International Court of Justice in The Hague Croatia's
response to FRY's complaint that this court is not competent for
this case, the foreign ministry reported Thursday. #L#
Croatia filed the initial lawsuit against FRY in July 1999, and in
March 2001 submitted comprehensive documents in six books which
include evidence about FRY's responsibility for genocide, research
on the consequences of the Serb 1991-1995 aggression, notes about
1,419 missing people, a list of cultural assets Croatia is asking
back, and a request for damages to Croatian citizens and the state,
says the statement.
Pursuant to FRY's September 2002 complaint about the court's
jurisdiction in the case, Croatia was given until April 29, 2003 to
prepare its response.
Based on the response which Simonovic will hand to the court
tomorrow, the ICJ is expected to set a date for a discussion on
jurisdiction soon, the ministry says.
