The trial of the daughter of Croatia's first president Franjo
Tudjman, Nevenka Tudjman, accused of illegal mediation and
receiving kickbacks, was adjourned last Tuesday at the start of the
main hearing after her lawyer Ante Vukorepa requested the exemption
of a few judges because he believed they might be biased against his
client.
The national office for the fight against corruption and organised
crime issued an indictment against Ms. Tudjman last October,
charging her with kicbacks for illegal assistance in helping a
company to arrange jobs of installing switchboards in several state
institutions.
According to the indictment, Nevenka Tudjman used her position in
society as the president's daughter to help Igor Knezevic to win
business contracts on installing the switchboards in a dozen
colleges, institutes and other public institutions.
She has thus obtained 1.7 million kuna (around EUR230,000) as
kickbacks, while Knezevic, cited as the second suspect in the
indictment, earned more than one million kuna.
Knezevic is charged with abuse of office and tax evasion.
