One of the three arrested -- the actual assassin -- offered to
testify as a protected witness.
According to information police obtained from the three men, Maka's
gang were the leading contract killers in the first half of the
1990s. Three previously unsolved murders have been cleared thanks
to their statements to police.
The murders were carried out at state bodies' orders. Members of
Maka's gang had identification issued by Serbia's State Security
Service. The slayings were carried out when the service was headed
by Jovica Stanisic, who was arrested immediately after the
assassination of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic last
month.
Journalists were told police had grounds to suspect that Maka, who
has been on the run since the Buha murder, had returned to Serbia to
reactivate his associates.
