KOSTUNICA DOESN'T FEEL RESPONSIBLE FOR DJINDJIC'S ASSASSINATION

BELGRADE, April 9 (Hina) - A former Yugoslav president and leader of the Democratic Party of Serbia, Vojislav Kostunica, has said that he sees no reason why he should be among those responsible for the assassination of Premier Zoran Djindjic. #L# One of the main problems in the current state of emergency is the fact that the fight against organised crime is used for settling accounts with political opponents, or even worse, for re- establishing a single party system, Kostunica said in an interview with Belgrade's "Blic" daily. He said he saw no reason why he should be among those considered responsible for Djindjic's murder and he did not expect to be brought in for police questioning. "I am not thinking about it at all and I see no reason for it, except if one wants to worsen the situation in Serbia and prolong the state of emergency," Kostunica said commenting on numerous accusations from the ruling coalition that he had thwarted reforms and supported some of the main pillars of the Slobodan Milosevic regime. Kostunica said he had not known about meetings between his advisor on national security, Rade Bulatovic, who was arrested yesterday, and the leaders of the "Zemun mobster clan". The former Yugoslav president claims that accusations against a former head of the Yugoslav army's intelligence service, Aleksandar Tomic, who was also arrested yesterday, were attempts to discredit him. He added that Tomic was the man who "deserves credit for discovering an espionage scandal (Momcilo Perisic's alleged spying for the United States)". The police accuse Bulatovic and Tomic of having contacted, before Djindjic's assassination, Milorad Lukovic Legija, a runaway commander of a unit for special operations, the so-called Red Berets, and the main suspect in Djindjic's murder.
