The protest will continue, Filip Lacic, the protester's
representative, told reporters in front of St. Mark's church. He
did not say how many policemen were still protesting.
He did say that the protesters have managed to persist in their
protest after they were unjustly dismissed from their jobs in an
Interior Ministry shake up.
About three thousand policemen were dismissed at the time in line
with criteria set by the Interior Ministry. The Ministry never
informed the public just what these criteria were and in the
meantime ethnic Serb who had been members of paramilitary forces
were taken on to the force. Some of these were later arrested as
suspects of war crimes, Lacic explained.
He thanked the church, MPs and war veterans' associations and the
public for their support adding that the protest was not of a
political nature.
Vlado Marovic, the attorney representing the protesters said that
following the restructure of the Interior Ministry, all policemen
who were released should have been cared for however, there are some
policemen who to this day have been deprived of their livelihood.
