ZAGREB, March 8 (Hina) - The government will approve the sale of
Sisak's ironworks on Monday as the buyer, Russian company Mechel,
has submitted what the government asked -- a good contract which
respects Croatian laws and a guarantee that if it walked out of the
ironworks, Mechel would secure the payment of six salaries, Prime
Minister Ivica Racan said on Saturday. #L#
He spoke to journalists in front of Dubrovnik hotel in downtown
Zagreb where he and his wife attended the marking of International
Women's Day organised by women's non-governmental organisations.
Commenting on developments surrounding the ironworks and when
production would resume, Racan said that "in part the government
has been very lonely in this. Having learned from bad experience,
the government fought with its conduct to ensure a future for the
ironworks and the safety of workers".
"Many sides, both local authorities and the partner, tried to
manipulate the workers and start the venture unreliably, but the
government was determined."
Racan said the government wanted a good contract that, among other
things, respected Croatia's legislation as "nobody has the right to
negate Croatia's sovereignty in this respect on its soil".
"We fought for workers' interests."
