ZAGREB, March 20 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic will address the nation on national television on Thursday evening on the occasion of the beginning of a military operation in Iraq, the President's office said in a
statement.

The President of the Republic reiterates the principled stand that
the action has been conducted on the basis of an independent
decision made by countries whose troops are engaged in the military
operation. Therefore, he stresses, this action has not been based
on the U.N.'s mandate and is not legitimate, the statement said.
Mesic also emphasises that Croatia has declared to support the
military option only if it results from a clear and unambiguous
decision by the world organisation.
President Mesic also expresses hope that the war will last as
shortly as possible, with the smallest number of victims on both
sides, among both civilians and soldiers, the statement said.
