Speaking at a panel discussion organised by the Social Democratic
Party's women's forum in Sisak on Saturday, Vidovic said the
unemployment rate among men was 45.4%, while among women it was
54.6%.
Women in Croatia are mostly employed in branches which are paid less
- catering, commerce and the textile industry. The men-women ratio
in managerial posts is 100:6, Vidovic said.
The Defence Minister and chairwoman of the government's Gender
Equality Commission, Zeljka Antunovic, said that International
Women's Day was a good opportunity to re-consider the position of
women in society, their future, equality and abilities.
Milanka Opacic, who chairs the parliament's Gender Equality
Committee, said the Law on Defence Forces for the first time
incorporated a regulation on the protection of women working in the
army while a labour bill included a regulation on the protection of
women against any form of discrimination. The bill also proposes
making working hours more flexible so that women can harmonise
their professional duties with those towards their families and
children, Opacic said.
She stated that two million kuna of budgetary funds had been set
aside for the stimulation of entrepreneurship and self-employment
among women this year.
