OPPOSITION: WHY IS GOV'T MOVING CONFLICT OF INTEREST BILL NOW?

ZAGREB, March 5 (Hina) - Debating bills on conflict of interest prevention in the performance of state duties on Wednesday, some opposition MPs did not question the need to adopt such a law but voiced suspicion as to why the government was moving it only now.
ZAGREB, March 5 (Hina) - Debating bills on conflict of interest prevention in the performance of state duties on Wednesday, some opposition MPs did not question the need to adopt such a law but voiced suspicion as to why the government was moving it only now. #L# Drago Krpina of the Croatian Democratic Union said the government was moving the bill only because parliamentary elections were approaching. He evaluated the motives of the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) to move its own draft of the bill as fair and noble. HSP's Miroslav Rozic said their bill had only one ambition, to avert what he said was the quite open and most dangerous form of corruption -- collusion between state officials and entrepreneurs. The government's bill was fully endorsed by the ruling coalition's Social Democrats. Mirjana Didovic said this law was imperative for a well-organised society and state, while Milanka Opacic said the law must create a framework of conduct for politicians. They advocated adopting the law as soon as possible and appointing honest, expert and politically neutral people to the commission that will "watch" how politicians behave. (hina) ha
