ZAGREB, Feb 28 (Hina) - Representatives of all branches of the
Association of Croatian Judges (UHS) adopted a report on Friday
concerning the work of the UHS. #L#
Presenting the report, the UHS president, Vladimir Gredelj,
assessed that the past year saw the full affirmation of the
association's policy but was also full of the fiercest attacks on
the association.
In the report, Gredelj criticised the Ministry of Justice and
Minister Ingrid Anticevic Marinovic's attitude towards the
judiciary and the association.
According to him, the incumbent government has adopted a series of
regulations that are detrimental to the independence and progress
of the judiciary. Steps like decreasing judges' salaries, the
introduction of a five year probation for new judges, the abolition
of doctors' titles for lawyers with a judiciary diploma and the most
controversial regulation that the Minister is responsible to
appoint court presidents.
Gredelj claimed that many judges' promotions were conditioned with
their having to leave the association particularly if they had
applied to be court presidents.
Commenting on claims that some judges objected to his public
appearances, Gredelj said that this criticism was made by some
people who were building their career on these objections and that
he enjoyed full support of the association.
He added that he would repeat all the activities he was being
accused of, including his organisation of the press conference for
a judge Slavko Lozina at Split County Court.
