ZAGREB, Feb 28 (Hina) - The Croatian parliament on Friday morning
resumed its 30th sitting by forwarding the government's final bill
on changes to the Law on Road Safety into the third reading. #L#
Almost all party benches stated in yesterday's debate about the
bill that the proposed introduction of stricter penalties for
drivers would not increase traffic safety.
They endorsed strict penalties for those who cause road accidents
by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and without a
driver's licence, but urged lower fines for driving without the
safety belt on, illegal parking and other minor violations.
The government endorsed the proposal to send the bill in the third
reading.
The parliament also adopted a bill on official statistics, as well
as a decision on the exercise "Cooperative engagement 2003", the
first multinational navy exercise in Croatia to be held within
NATO's Partnership for Peace on the central Adriatic in September,
and a decision resuming the mission of Croatian military observers
in the peace mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea.
