ZAGREB/HAGUE, Jan 30 (Hina) - Protected witness C-16 said on
Thursday at the trial of former Yugoslav President Slobodan
Milosevic in The Hague that the Yugoslav People's Army should have
been an army preventing conflicts and protecting all citizens,
which it had not been. #L#
Cross-examining the witness, Milosevic enumerated assaults which
members of "Croatian paramilitary forces" carried out against
Croatian Serbs and JNA members in 1990 and 1991 in an attempt to
prove that the JNA was "the only legal force to protect the
citizens". The witness replied that the JNA should have been such an
army, but was not. The witness also confirmed that the JNA
participated in conflicts in Dalj and Erdut in eastern Croatia on
the side of Serb rebels.
