ZAGREB, Jan 14 (Hina) - Croatian Health Minister Andro Vlahusic
said Tuesday that most resident doctors will work normally during a
strike to start on Wednesday. #L#
Vlahusic told reporters that the strike will be even less
successful than the one organised in schools, because less than
eight percent of hospital doctors will respond.
General practitioners will not participate in the strike.
The Croatian Doctors' Union has requested a 45 percent increase in
salaries, which means that the current average monthly salary of a
doctor, with contributions for working years, stand-by hours and
shift hours, totalling 9,000 kuna (EUR1,200), would increase to
13,500 kuna (EUR1,800). The government cannot accept that, the
minister said.
Some doctors, together with contributions, have higher salaries
than the prime minister (18,000 kuna), he said.
Vlahusic recalled that the Health Ministry had offered a ten
percent increase in salaries for all health workers, as well as
additional education and the employment of young doctors with
passed state examination.
The ministry is ready to pay a salary increased by 25 percent to
doctors who work more, as well as to increase contributions for
special working conditions, which would be somewhere between six to
20 percent, the minister said.
Hospital administrations will be obliged to inform the Health
Ministry about the number of doctors on strike.
