ZAGREB, Jan 13 (Hina) - A strike in Croatian primary schools, which

The strike was staged by the Croatian (Primary School) Teachers'
Union (SHU), which earlier announced the five-day strike because
the government decided to allocate additional funds for the school
system, to cover only an increase in the salaries of teachers, while
non-teaching staff was not granted an increase.
The SHU also insists that the Education Ministry earmark from its
budget an additional 80 million kuna so that the gross salaries of
all employees in primary schools could rise by 10 percent.
An SHU commissioner for Zagreb told Hina that, for example, only 12
of about 100 schools in the capital did not open until 11 am.
Commissioner Ivan Piskulic said the low turnout was expected, given
the growing pressure and threats from the Education Ministry which
said that the time spent on strike would not be paid.
Besides, some teachers abandoned the strike after they saw that the
non-teaching staff, for whose salaries the action had been
launched, did not join in the strike, Piskulic said.
A federation of unions - the Independent Croatian Unions - today
forwarded a letter of support to the SHU.
