She was asked to comment on Globus weekly's claim that the United States had sent a letter to the European Union requesting that it postpone the start of Croatia's membership talks until General Ante Gotovina, who is wanted by the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague, is arrested.
Pusic said the start of the talks would be made conditional on the submission in March of one more report on Croatia's cooperation with the UN court. She underlined that the content of the condition would be very important.
Pusic said she learned about the US letter from the media but thought "the letter isn't something that in any way influences the EU countries which decide on the start of the talks" with Croatia.
She spoke to the press before a working lunch with the ambassadors of Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia and Montenegro, and Bosnia-Herzegovina, and the chief of the European Commission Delegation to Croatia, Jacques Wunenburger. Today's meeting was the fourth such meeting and focused on multilateral and bilateral projects in the region which could be supported with European funds.
