ZAGREB, Dec 4 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said on Saturday that his talks with President Stjepan Mesic on Friday evening were very good and open. The meeting focused on the current political situation, Croatia's admission to the European Union, the work of the Counterintelligence Agency (POA) and a session of the National Security Council, Sanader said.

With regard to EU entry, we discussed what should be done to ensure that Croatia gets a date for the start of accession talks on December 17, Sanader said.

"We exchanged our opinions on these topics and agreed to meet again in the next few days," Sanader told reporters in Zagreb's Ban Jelacic Square, where signatures were collected to support the candidacy of the Croatian Democratic Union's presidential candidate, Jadranka Kosor.

Sanader said that the National Security Council would definitely hold a session, and that he and President Mesic would in the meantime consider their positions on the said issues.

Asked if it was true that President Mesic had provided him with written evidence and stated that he would not give up his request to replace the POA chief, Sanader said that he had said everything he had to say on that topic.

He gave the same answer when asked if he would stick by his decision not to replace POA chief Josko Podbevsek.

Asked whether he would publicise information on when and on whose order reporter Helena Puljiz had been placed under surveillance by secret services, Sanader said he had requested a complete report from the POA chief and that he could not elaborate on the issue until he saw the report.

"One thing is certain - if in the past or during the current term there have been omissions or some legislative solutions which are not good, we should work on changing the law and adjusting it to European legislation and democratic standards. If we are adjusting the entire legislation to EU standards, we should do so with legislation on security services as well. I will launch an initiative to change the legislation, but after the session of the National Security Council," the PM said.
