CROATIAN, ITALIAN PRESIDENTS MEET IN ROME

ZAGREB, Dec 1 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said aftertalks Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi in Rome on Wednesday thathe would meet his Italian and Slovene counterparts on the northernAdriatic archipelago of Brijuni next year to put an end to discussionson World War One and Two and send a message of peace and cooperationamong the three countries.
ZAGREB, Dec 1 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said after talks Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi in Rome on Wednesday that he would meet his Italian and Slovene counterparts on the northern Adriatic archipelago of Brijuni next year to put an end to discussions on World War One and Two and send a message of peace and cooperation among the three countries.

"We talked about the proposal to dot the i's on World War One and Two and send a message of peace and cooperation," Mesic said after meeting the Italian president.

He said that the Croatian-Italian-Slovene conference should be held on Brijuni in spring 2005.

Mesic and Ciampi talked about the two countries' relations and the situation in the region. They stressed the need for better cooperation among Adriatic countries.

President Mesic met representatives of Croatian associations and communities in Italy at the Croatian Embassy in Rome and presented three Italian citizens with high state decorations.

Thanking the three Italians, Mesic said that owing to people who were helping Croatia the country felt that it was not small or on the edge of Europe.

He said he was not happy with the pace of Croatia's association with Euro-Atlantic structures and stressed that all obligations on that path must be met.

During his stay in Rome, Mesic will take part in the 50th general assembly of the international Atlantic Council.

He is also scheduled to meet NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Albanian President Alfred Moisiu and Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski.
